Frequently Asked Questions
In our time providing Pelvic Health physiotherapy to Palmerston North, we have received so many understandable questions. Remember, this should not be a mystery or something to feel embarrassed about. Here is a collection of some of the questions we frequently hear.
What does a pelvic floor physio do?
We work alongside our patient to help to manage and treat the following conditions:
bladder and bowel problems
pelvic organ prolapse
chronic pelvic pain/sexual dysfunction
pregnancy related musculoskeletal issues
pre & post-operative gynaecological advice
What can I expect at my first pelvic floor visit?
time listening and taking detailed history
movement and alignment assessment
pelvic exam (external and possibly internal as required)
assessment of abdominal muscles and core function
explanation of assessment and any treatments
education regarding assessment findings and management
I know I have a problem "down there", how do I know if you are what I need?
If you are suffering from any form of incontinence, pelvic floor dysfunction and problems arising from childbirth and pregnancy, it would be good to work together. If it is out of our scope of expertise, we will work with you to navigate a plan of action with other experts in their field.
Can’t I just do some Kegals?
Pelvic floor muscle exercises are not always easy and straightforward. Every body is different. The pelvic floor muscles are complicated and are often hard to isolate.
It is my goal to help you understand this system, identify your specific needs, and design an exercise programme that will allow you to walk out the door stronger, more educated, and empowered with a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
Should I wait until after my pregnancy?
Women’s health is important at any stage of pregnancy: pre, during, and post. Unfortunately, we see too many women facing problems after pregnancy. The earlier we can work together to build up awareness, strength and tools, the more likely you are to stay healthy throughout the process.
Do I need a referral?
No, you do not need a referral to be seen. However, some women are referred by their Specialist, GP or Midwife and may come with a referral letter.
Can I bring my baby or child along to my session?
You can bring your child but from experience, women are not able to get the most out of their appointment if they are distracted. Additionally, we share a space with other health professionals within a so if a disruption does occur, we will ask that you discretely take the child out of the building so as not to distract our neighbours and their clients.
Will I need an internal examination?
If your symptoms involve your pelvic floor, we may request your permission to do an internal vaginal examination. You can withdraw your consent at any time. An internal examination is the best way we can check your pelvic floor function, strength, co-ordination and endurance.
How many appointments will I need?
This will depend on your condition and progress. We will have an idea after our initial consultation but in most cases, at least one follow up appointment is required.
Our ultimate goal is to help you reach a level of self-managed independence so you should no longer require regular treatments.
